UEFA Warns Russia, England of Possible Disqualification After Fan Clashes

On Sunday the Executive Committee of UEFA expressed its disgust at the violent fan clashes surrounding Saturday’s Euro 2016 Group B encounter between England and Russia.

The centre of the city of Marseilles was the site of violent clashes between English and Russian supporters both before and after the game and incidents were also reported at the end of the match inside Velodrome stadium.

UEFA was firm that such unacceptable behaviour has no place in football.

It warned both football associations that, irrespective of any decisions taken by the independent disciplinary bodies relating to the incidents inside the stadium, it will not hesitate to impose additional sanctions, including the potential disqualification of the two teams if there are repeated instances of violence.

UEFA called on both the English Football Association and the Russian Football Union to appeal to their supporters to behave in a responsible and respectful manner.

It expressed support for the efforts of French authorities and security forces to deliver a safe and secure tournament in challenging circumstances.

UEFA informed that disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Russia for the following incidents occurring inside the stadium – crowd disturbances, setting off fireworks and throwing missiles. A decision on the sanctions to be imposed will be made within the next few days.

UEFA admitted there were segregation issues at the stadium and vowed to implement corrective measures to strengthen the deployment of security personnel at stadiums.

The match itself finished 1-1, with England coming in the lead after Eric Dier scored a free-kick in the 73rd minute, but Vasili Berezutski managed to equalize for Russia in the second minute of injury time.
