The Bulgarian government decided to allocate slightly over BGN 5.1 M for the purchase of equipment to be used by the specialised police forces and the gendarmerie.

This was announced by the deputy chief secretary of the interior ministry Georgi Abadzhiev at a briefing on Friday.

The decision was announced at a working group of the professional leadership of the interior ministry with Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, who had ordered for reviewing the options of allocating additional funding to the  interior ministry.

The need for the additional expenses is justified in a report submitted to Interior Minister Rumyana Bachvarova last week, which outlines the most urgent needs of the ministry's structures across the country.

The director of the Chief Directorate National Police clarified that the funds will be used for the purchase of personal protective gear, protective equipment, vehicles and radio communication units.

Considerable part of the sum will be used for building upon of two information systems – the central police system and the integrated police register and will be allocated to the specialised forces operating in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Ruse and Stara Zagora.

The budget of the interior ministry for 2016 exceeds BGN 1.1 B.
