A former interim Interior Minister is taking over the State Agency for Refugees, the Bulgarian government has said.

At a cabinet meeting, Petya Parvanova, who oversaw internal affairs under the 2013 caretaker administration of Marin Raykov, has been appointed to the office.

In February, the government dismissed Nikola Kazakov as head of the agency, days after a TV report suggesting procurement of food to the agency had been made at inflated prices and without a proper public tender.

Kircho Kirov, who until then was deputy chair of the agency, was appointed as its head ad interim.

Parvanova had headed the Interior Ministry's  international cooperation directorate for ten years before assuming a managerial office at the Bulgarian Academy of Science.

Between November 2014 and March 2015 she advised Deputy PM Meglena Kuneva on internal affairs, migration, and asylum. Since March 2015, she has worked as an advisor to incumbent Interior Minister Rumyana Bachvarova.
