Bulgarian Deputy Education Minister to Step Down

Bulgarian Deputy Education Minister Vanya Kastreva will submit her resignation to Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.

Kastreva said in an interview for private Bulgaria ON AIR on Monday that her resignation was the most logical step amid the chaos ensuing from the circulation of untruths concerning Bulgarian education.

The news for her resignation comes as Education Minister Todor Tanev is expected to submit his resignation on Monday.

Borisov demanded the resignation of Tanev last week over the systematic problems in the education sector and proposed controversial changes to the school curriculum which have not been subject to broad public discussion.

According to Kastreva, many people have not read the school curriculum. She claimed that no changes to terminology had been made.

Tanev has not yet submitted his resignation, saying that he will not step down before he has had a meeting with Borisov.

On Saturday it emerged that after his resignation, Tanev will be appointed as an adviser to Borisov.

At a meeting with the junior coalition partners from the Reformist Bloc (RB) last week, Borisov said that he will leave it to them to determine the candidate for new minister as the portfolio was from their quota.

Following two extraordinary meetings of representatives of the parties constituting RB, Deputy Prime Minister Meglena Kuneva was proposed as Tanev's successor.
