Lt. Gen. Constantin Popov Nominated for Bulgarian Chief of Defence

Bulgaria’s Defence Council has nominated Lieutenant General Constantin Popov as new Chief of Defence, replacing Vice Admiral Rumen Nikolov.

At present, Popov is Deputy Chief of Defence. Popov had been Commander of Bulgarian Air Force (2011-2014) prior to becoming Deputy Chief of Defense. He had also served as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Allied Air Component Command Headquarters, in Izmir, Turkey (2006-2008)

The consultative body within the Defence Ministry has decided to launch a procedure for the appointment of Popov, to take effect from 9 February 2016, the Defence Ministry said in a statement.

The Chief of Defence is appointed by the Bulgarian President upon a proposal by the government and has a four-year term of office.

The Defence Council would also propose to send into retirement Vice Admiral Rumen Nikolov who had reached the required age limit.
