Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister Meglena Kuneva called on Tuesday on the members of the Supreme Judicial Council (VSS) to resign in order to preserve the reputation of the institution.

Kuneva added that the members of VSS have to decide for themselves whether to submit their resignations or not as the other authorities can urge them to resign, but are not capable of dismissing them.

In her words, even if they do not resign now, their term will eventually expire and they will be replaced.

However the new members of VSS will be faced with the challenging task of dealing with a harmed reputation.

According to her, the adoption of legislative initiatives could solve to some extent the problem with the current membership of VSS, but this will not be a long-term solution.

As regards the recent SMS scandal within VSS, she reminded that since 2001 she has championed the cause for impartiality of the judiciary.

Kuneva added that several months ago the Reformist Bloc (RB) tabled amendments to the penal code against informal contacts between the judiciary and other authorities.

As regards the forthcoming report of the European Commission under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM), she said there were no indications for the country being decoupled from Romania.

According to a draft of the CVM report, which is expected to be officially unveiled on Wednesday, the European Commission will be most critical in its assessment of VSS and the prosecution.
