A forum on combating human trafficking is taking place in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia on Tuesday.

The meeting entitled “Preparation of a strategy on countering human trafficking” began at 9:30 EET in the Musala hall of Hilton hotel.

It is organised by the National Commission for Combating Traffic in Human Beings and will bring together representatives of all institutions participating in the commission including those at local level.

The meeting will be unveiled by Deputy Prime Minister Meglena Kuneva who is chairperson of the commission.

The forum will also be attended by the EU Anti-Trafficking Coordinator Myria Vassiliadou who will present the progress on the new European strategy on countering human trafficking.

Among the participants at the conference will be also MEP Mariya Gabriel, British ambassador Emma Hopkins, Dutch ambassador Tom van Oorschot, Swiss ambassador Denis Knobel and Norwegian ambassador Guro Katharina Vikor.

There will be also representatives of the NGO sector and international organisations involved in combating human trafficking and protection of victims.

Meanwhile, the press service of the Bulgarian government announced on Monday that the commission is beginning work on a five-year strategy on countering human trafficking and protection of victims.

The work on the document begins as the European Commission is expected to unveil its new strategy on combating human trafficking later this year.
