The prices of tickets for public transport in some of the largest Bulgarian cities are likely to increase in the spring.

At present municipalities are doing final calculations whether to increase the public transport fares.

Some of the municipalities are likely to respond to the call of Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov, who last year urged mayors to increase the local taxes in view of the expected rise of the state expenditures on security.

At present, a ticket in most Bulgarian cities costs BGN 1, with the cheapest fares being in Blagoevgrad - BGN 0.7 and Veliko Tarnovo - BGN 0.8, private NOVA TV informs.

The price of tickets is expected to increase in Sofia and Burgas, with the fares in the capital expected to go up to BGN 1.5.

Another major change for Sofia will be the implementation of electronic payment in the spring when citizens of the capital will be traveling using an electronic pass.

With the new rules, the price of tickets will be determined by the number of stops or the journey time.

In Burgas, the idea for an electronic pass will be implemented in April, with the city to be divided into several zones.

No increase in the price of tickets is foreseen in the city of Varna. At this stage no increases are foreseen in the cities of Blagoevgrad, Plovdiv and Stara Zagora.

The citizens of Ruse will continue to travel for BGN 1, but they will be able to change several buses within an hour.
