The United Nations (UN) Security Council called on all parties to the conflict in Syria to cease any attacks against civilians as well as the indiscriminate use of weapons in populated areas.

It also urged all parties to work towards a political solution to the lasting crisis through the full implementation of the Geneva Communique of 30 June 2012.

The Geneva Communique provides for the establishment of a transitional governing body comprising both members of the present government and the opposition with full executive powers.

In its statement, the UN body pointed to an “inclusive and Syrian-led political process that meets the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people” as the only sustainable solution to the current crisis.

At the end of July, the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, presented to the Security Council a new approach addressing four thematic areas.

The four areas are: safety and protection of all; political and legal issues; military, security and counter-terrorism issues; continuity of public services and reconstruction and development.

The Security Council supported the approach proposed by the Special Envoy and urged all parties to engage in implementing the suggested measures.

The UN body also expressed its gravest concern that parts of Syria are under control of Islamic State (IS) and Al Nusrah Front and called on all parties to commit themselves to fighting terrorism.
