Bulgarians will now be able to vote on referendums. This is one of the prescriptions of the new law amendment to be reviewed in Parliament Wednesday.

The legislative commission to Bulgarian Parliament approved the proposals for change at end July and now the text will be further reviewed by MPs for the second time.

One of the changes proposed states that only 400,000 signatures will be required for a referendum to be called as opposed to the current minimum of 500,000.

MPs have currently approved the portion of amendments stating that the referendum vote will be deemed valid only if no less than 40% of people who have voting rights have participated. Additionally, over half of that number need to have said β€˜β€™yes’’ to the referendum question so that the proposal can be deemed legitimate.

Bulgarian citizens residing abroad will also have the opportunity to vote on referendums.
