ABB Bulgaria employed 400 new people over the past year and is planning to hire additional 200 employees by the end of 2015 at its second production plant in the town of Rakovski.

This was announced by representatives of the company on Thursday at a press conference on the occasion of the first anniversary since the opening of the second factory in Rakovski.

Among the participants in the conference were Ekkehard Neureither, Country Managing Director of ABB Bulgaria, Ahmed Hassan, Factory Manager of the two plants in Rakovski and Mayor of Plovdiv Ivan Totev.

Ekkehard Neureither started by providing a brief introduction of the company’s history, main areas of operation, key products, core values and existing partnerships.

ABB, which stands for ASEA Brown Boveri, is a multinational corporation headquartered in Zurich and a global leader in power and automation technology.

The company is present in more than 100 countries, employing more than 140 000 worldwide with its revenue in 2014 amounting to USD 40 B.

ABB, which resulted from the merger of the Swedish corporation ASEA and the Swiss company Brown, Boveri & Cie (BBC) in 1988, specialises mainly in robotics and the power and automation technologies.

The company has managed to establish balance between its five global divisions – power products, power systems, discrete automation and motion, low voltage products and process automation.

Its core values include safety and integrity, customer focus and quality, innovation and speed, ownership and performance, collaboration and trust.

ABB has fruitful cooperation with other international companies, which have established themselves as leaders in their respective areas, such as Philips, Bosch, Cisco, Hitachi, Vestas, BYD and Ericsson.

An example of the company’s successful partnership is its participation in the Solar Impulse project, which aims to complete the first round-the-world solar flight with an aircraft powered without any energy coming from fossil fuels.

Following the brief introduction, Ahmed Hassan provided an overview of the company’s development in Bulgaria.

ABB established a representative office in Bulgaria back in 1988 and at present boasts five sites in Sofia, Petrich, Rakovski, Sevlievo and Varna.

The two productions plants in Rakovski specialise in low and medium voltage products, its head office is located in Sofia, the site in Petrich specialises in low voltage products, the one in Sevlievo produces high voltage products, while a turbocharger service station is located in Varna.

At present, ABB employs 2000 people in Bulgaria and the number of people the company employed in the country has grown by approximately 4.5 times from 463 people in 2008 to 2020 employees in 2015.

The second plant in Rakovski became operational in 2014 with a capacity of 600 workplaces, which the company aims to fulfill by the end of the year by hiring an additional 200 people.

Among the main low voltage products are contactors and emergency stop push-buttons, which are utilised in the protection and control of motors and systems, while the medium voltage products include apparatuses and switchgears.

Plovdiv Mayor Ivan Totev expressed gratitude to the company, which has become an emblem of the industrial development of Plovdiv, its two factories in Rakovski providing employment to 1500 people from the region.

Totev highlighted the high social responsibility of the company, the special cares it provides to its employees, the good labour conditions and the prospects for development.

Although the company has been experiencing problems with ensuring adequate supply of labour force from the region, it has taken measures towards addressing the issue.

ABB Bulgaria has tried to make technical education more attractive in schools and universities and works in close collaboration with the Technical University of Sofia and in particular its branch in Plovdiv.

As a proof of its close ties with the educational establishments from the region, ABB Bulgaria awarded its first Jurgen Dormann Foundation scholarships to three Bulgarian electrical engineering students.
