Suicide Attack Targets Ancient Egyptian Temple in Luxor

A suicide attack targeted on Wednesday the ancient Karnak temple in the southern Egyptian city of Luxor.

According to Al Jazeera, no tourists were injured in the attack, which targeted one of Egypt's most popular tourist attractions.

Officials said that police have foiled two other suicide attacks also targeting the ancient temple and the BBC reports that two assailants were killed.

The Karnak temple is a vast open-air complex, which is visited by millions of foreign and Egyptian tourists every year.

It is the second largest ancient religious site in the world and is believed to be the second most visited site in Egypt after the pyramids in Giza.

The attack comes a week after two police officers were killed by a gunmen on a road leading to the Great Pyramids of Giza.

Local media reported that three assailants were killed in the attack and four bystanders were injured.

The assailants tried to storm the barricade at the temple with the police killing two of the attackers, while the third managed to pass through it and blew himself up.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but Islamist militants have killed hundreds of security forces and government personnel since the military deposed President Mohammed Morsi in 2013.
