The Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office has submitted to the Sofia City Court a motion for restarting the suspended administrative-criminal proceedings against Sergei Stanishev, former Bulgarian Prime Minister and current MEP and leader of the Party of European Socialists (PES).

Stanishev, former leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), was charged in 2010 with losing seven documents containing classified information during his term in office as Prime Minister in 2005-2009.

The case was returned to the prosecuting authority several times for clarification.

There were several false starts of the case due to procedural breaches.

In December 2013 the prosecuting authority requested that Stanishev be exempted from criminal liability and instead face an administrative penalty.

The proceedings were stopped in September 2014 after Stanishev was elected MEP.

However, the case was restarted after a decision of the European Parliament from March 2015 on lifting Stanishev’s immunity from prosecution.
