EU Commission Vice-President Kristalina Georgieva was appointed as co-chair of the newly-established UN High-Level Panel on Humanitarian Financing.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the establishment of the panel on Thursday, the UN News Centre reports.

The panel aims to address the broadening gap between resources and financing for the heightened number of humanitarian efforts, which are increasingly facing the world.

Ban Ki-moon noted that the demand for humanitarian aid had risen “dramatically” over the past decade with increase in water scarcity, food insecurity, demographic shifts, rapid urbanisation and climate change.

This made current resources and funding insufficient to meet the rising demand for aid, which according to UN estimates will amount to USD 19.1 B in 2015.

The other co-chair of the panel, who was appointed together with Kristalina Georgieva, is Sultan Nazrin Shah of Malaysia.

The panel will examine challenges to humanitarian financing and will identify ways for narrowing the gap between rising needs and the available resources.

The body will also focus on provision of more timely and predictable funding as well as ensuring more efficient use of resources.

The panel is expected to submit its recommendations to the Secretary-General in November, which will help frame the discussions at the World Humanitarian Summit in May 2016.
