Bulgaria Slaps BGN 1.25 M Fine on CEZ Unit

Bulgaria’s anti-trust regulator said in Monday it imposed a fine of BGN 1.25 M on CEZ Distribution Bulgaria for abusing the company’s dominant market position.

CEZ Distribution Bulgaria, majority owned by the Czech Republic’s CEZ, said it would appeal the decision of the Commission for Protection of Competition (CRC).

According to the regulator, the power distributor had “unjustifiably delayed” the purchase of electricity infrastructure from a customer who had built it – something that power distributors are required to do under Bulgarian energy regulations.

CRC said in a statement that by delaying the purchase of electricity infrastructure built by a customer CEZ Distribution Bulgaria “could prevent, restrain and breach competition and affect the rights of consumers”.
