Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US State Secretary John Kerry laid wreaths and exchanged gifts during their meeting on Tuesday.

The meeting between the Russian and US delegations in Sochi lasted for four hours, TASS news agency reports.

Lavrov presented Kerry with a Victory Day t-shirt dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Second World War as well as two baskets with potatoes and tomatoes.

In exchange, the US State Secretary handed a list of quotes from the Russian media, which according to him, did not reflect the real potential of bilateral relations.

Among the topics of discussion at their meeting were the situation in Ukraine, Syria and the talks on Iran.

Before their meeting, Lavrov and Kerry laid wreaths at a memorial to Red Army soldiers, who had fallen in World War Two.

The Kremlin welcomed the decision of Kerry to visit Moscow, as this would contribute to returning of dialogue between the two countries and the normalisation of relations.

Kerry highlighted the importance of keeping lines of communication between the two countries as they addressed global issues.

According to a statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Lavrov said that the attempt of the West to exert pressure through the imposition of sanctions was a “way to a dead end”.


The Russian Foreign Minister added that cooperation was only possible on the “basis of a fair and equal rights, without attempts to dictate and coerce”

During his visit to Moscow, Kerry is also holding talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which will be the first such high-level meeting since the worsening of relations after the Ukrainian crisis.
