The European Parliament has voted positively on the implementation of a new system for emergency calls from vehicles - eCall.

The new devices will be directly connected to local rescue authorities and will need to be placed in each and every new vehicle up until March 31, 2018.

Bulgarian EU MP Eva Paunova noted that the program can be seen as a first step in the creation of a mechanism for saving lives. Furthermore, in her words, it is a clear example of the benefits that the EU can bring to its citizens. She made a statement during the official discussion on the matter that took place in Strasbourg Monday.

The automobile system eCall will be warning authorities automatically in case of severe road accidents. In this way more prompt action can be ensured and hopefully over 2,600 lives can be saved in this way.

Asked whether the new system would be violating security of personal information, Paunova answered that the system will only be used in case of road accidents. She added that having in mind all the benefits the system could bring, all member stated should be aiming at putting it into practice as soon as possible, so that it could be used effectively immediately after 2018.
