Tsipras Gets Green Light On Forming New Greek Government

Greek PM Alexis Tsipras won the confidence vote in Greek parliament on Tuesday. He is to form a government consisting of his left-wing party SYRIZA and coalition partner, the righ-wing conservatives from ANEL.

In a series of statements, the newly-elected Greek PM has been pointing to his view that austerity policies upon Greece are not sustainable. In his words, an opinion poll has shown that this namely is the reason why SYRIZA has won 149 seats in Greek Parliament.

''We are not negotiating the bailout; it was cancelled by its own failure," Tsipras said in a speech in parliament, as quoted by Reuters. He managed to secure 162 out of 300 MP affirmative votes on forming the new government.

Meanwhile, Greek Finance Minister Varoufakis has been engaged in a series of talks regarding the new financial plan SYRIZA has proposed to Europe. It involves a six-month transitional period, with Greece being allowed to issue short-term treasury bonds, decrease the required budget surplus, as well as receive profits due on its assets held at European banks.

Eurozone creditors, led by Germany, however, have expressed an unwillingness to renegotiate any conditions until Greece shows firm signs of stability and steps towards economic reform.

It is expected that the matter will be further discussed at the meeting of eurozone finance ministers on Wednesday, as well as on Thursday, when EU leaders will gather.
