Striking Bulgarian Coal Miners End Protest over Delayed Pay

Striking Bulgarian coal miners at the Cherno More mine have ended their protest on Wednesday afternoon after receiving assurance they will get their delayed salaries.

Thirty-three miners at the mine located near the Black Sea city of Burgas on Wednesday morning decided to go on strike and remained in the pit after their night shift was over, demanding to receive their pay for the past two months.

The protesting workers started leaving the mine at 1.30 pm EET (1130 UTC) after they were informed that the state-owned National Electricity Company had paid BGN 1.2 M to the coal-fired heating utility in the town of Sliven, which in turn owed the sum to the miners for their delayed salaries for October and November.

Wednesday's strike was the second one held at the mine over the past three months. Workers there protested in September over not having received salaries for July and August.
