Traffic Police Will Not Pull Over Motorists Unless Necessary

Bulgaria's traffic police will not pull over motorists for speeding and all contacts between drivers and police on the road will be filmed.

This are the two main measures against traffic police corruption, presented by Bulgaria's Interior Minister Veselin Vuchkov at a press conference on Tuesday in Sofia.

If necessary, in the future the motorists will be pulled over only by specially trained police officers and the contacts and exchanges between police and motorists will be filmed by a second police team, present at the scene.

“The public should not think that from today they can do whatever they want on the road,” Vuchkov told the media. “The traffic violations will be controlled by the speed cameras – 25 stationary and 148 mobile – and the tickets will be automatically issued and sent. The implementation of the speed cameras will solve 80% of the corruption among the traffic police.”

Another measure will be the installation of GPS tracking devices and microphones in all traffic police patrol cars.
