Archaeologists Uncover Secret Tunnels Beneath Bulgaria's Pliska

The archaeological team of Mariela Inkova uncovered a network of secret tunnels under the first capital of Bulgaria – Pliska, reports BGNES.

The archaeologists explore one of the entrances – a wooden structure, which survived a fire and the passage of time.

“The planks are well cut and cover exactly the entrance of the tunnel,” Inkova said. “The wooden boards finish at the doors that served as a panelling.”

The singed boards are a clear proof of the burning of Pliska by the army of the Byzantine emperor Nikephoros I who captured the city in 811 A.D.

During the excavations the team also found a lead stamp.
