Two Bulgarians Sentenced to Probation for Vote-Buying ahead of Early Elections

Two people have been convicted of vote buying in summary proceedings, according to reports of Bulgaria’s prosecuting authority and Interior Ministry.

A 45-year-old man from the northern town of Knezha was sentenced to 6 months of probation under Article 167, paragraph 2 of the Penal Code for inducing voters to cast ballots for a certain political party.

A 62-year-old woman from the northern city of Pleven was sentenced to one year of probation for the same offence.

The sentences were issued after a police operation conducted on October 2-3 on the territory of the country.

The authorities seized lists of names, telephone numbers and addresses, notebooks, memory sticks, etc, as part of the investigation.

A total of 930 people, who were found to have received money to vote for a certain party, were issued warnings.

The authorities have opened 53 pre-trial proceedings, including two cases of summary proceedings, since the start of the election campaign, according to reports of dnevnik.bg.

Bulgarian caretaker Interior Minister Yordan Bakalov has vowed an uncompromising approach towards breaches of election rules.
