Trade Union Insists on Swift Adoption of Laws before Early Elections

The Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) has insisted on the urgent adoption of key laws before the dissolution of Parliament.

Stressing the need for a smooth transition and continuity, CITUB President Plamen Dimitrov argued Friday that Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski had to present a detailed report on the financial situation in the country before resigning.

He insisted on topical information about the budget revenues and expenditures, the deficit, the government debt and the fiscal reserve, and the implementation of crucial energy projects such as the South Stream gas pipeline, unit 7 of the Kozloduy nuclear power plant, etc.

Dimitrov, as cited by the Bulgarian National Radio, argued that parliamentary and extra-parliamentary political parties had to reach consensus on issuing new debt to cover half of the debts of the National Electric Company (NEK) and to guarantee that there would be no power supply disruptions in the country despite the alarming condition of NEK.

He noted that the CITUB opposed an increase in the retirement age for any of the three labor categories by end-2018, adding that only the required years of service could increase by four months per year.
