The Democratic People's Republic of Korea has replaced its "number top" cadre in political hierarchy, Choe Ryong-hae.

In a report on May Day events by North Korea's mouthpiece KCNA it was revealed that Hwang Pyong-so would be the new military politburo chief, according to The South China Morning Post.

The motives for the decision remain unclear. Health problems might explain the move.

However, months ago a military reshuffle was carried out at top levels by leader Kim Jong-un, who removed from power and executed his uncle Jang Song-thaek for "treachery".

Hwang has been promoted to a Vice Marshal less than two weeks after he became a four-star general.

Pyongyang's decision comes amid alleged preparations for a fourth nuclear test, reports of which came from satellite images.

North Korea's nuclear program has been strongly condemned by international activity.
