100,000 Evacuated after 6.7-Magnitude Chile Earthquake

A 6.7-magnitude earthquake shook Chile’s northern Pacific shore on Sunday, causing the evacuation of more than 100,000 people.

The US Geological Survey originally reported the quake at 4.16pm at a depth of 20km with epicenter of 60km northwest of the Chilean port of Iquique.

The earthquake was followed by a 6.2-magnitude quake, one of 5.1 and three of 4.9. Only minor damage was reported.

Due to a potential minor tsunami, authorities urged people to evacuate along a stretch of coast where the Arica and Parinacota region adjoins the Tarapaca region, the Guardian reports.

Chile is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries. In 2010, a quake of 8.8 magnitude followed by a tsunami killed more than 500 people and destroyed 220,000 homes.
