EC Starts Penal Procedure against Bulgaria on EU Election Rules

The European Commission has launched an infringement procedure against Bulgaria regarding the upcoming European elections.

Bulgaria has a deadline until Thursday, March 6, to report to Brussels whether it has incorporated into its national legislation an EU directive on the right of citizens living in another European Union country to be elected as MEPs, Bulgarian website Dnevnik.bg has informed.

The directive's aim was to ease voting procedures at European elections and to deal with the steadily declining turnout.

The document has so far been ignored by a total of 14 EU countries such as Belgium, Denmark, France, and Romania.

A total of 14 M Europeans, 8 M of which have the right to vote, live in an EU member state different than their country of birth.
