Bulgaria can rely on EU money to overcome the problem with air pollution, Bulgarian Nova TV reported Monday.

During the calculation of the Operational Program Environment 2020 funding, the European Commission has recommended that Bulgaria should prepare projects which will be funded in the next programming period.

"We have the European Commission’s support and we are working on substantiating our proposals,” Bulgaria’s Minister of Environment and Water Iskra Mihaylova said, cited by Nova TV.

Earlier in February, excessive air pollution was registered in 15 Bulgarian cities.

In four of them – Varna, Pernik, Pleven and Lovech, the air pollution was nearly twice as high as the allowed levels.

In certain areas of capital city of Sofia the levels were three times higher than the norm, NovaTV reported.

Recently Greenpeace published a report, which claimed that Bulgaria has the highest air pollutionwith sulfur dioxide and fine dust particles per produced kWh of electricity in Europe.
