Corruption Scandal Cost Turkey EUR 80 B - Opposition Leader

The corruption scandal that is shaking the Turkish government has immensely harmed the country's economy, according to opposition CHP party leader Kemal K?l?cdaroglu.

According to the opposition leader's estimates, the costs amount to some TRY 247 B, or some EUR 83 B.

"With this money, the government could have paid minimum wages for 8 years to 2.8 M unemployed who are looking for jobs. Or it could have payed salaries for 30 years to 300,000 teachers, who are waiting to be appointed to a position," said K?l?cdaroglu for Turkish NTV channel.

K?l?cdaroglu warned that with the continuation of the scandal, the country is bound to face further damages.

The situation in Turkey came to a head after a high-profile corruption probe in December implicated a number of ministers in receiving bribes, forcing Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan to replace almost half of his cabinet.

Erdogan has reacted by saying that the investigation is part of a plot, supported by outside forces, to drive him out of power.
