Iskra Mihaylova, Bulgaria's Minister of Environment and Water, has said that the garbage fee is to drop in 2015 as a result of the introduction of new provisions.

Mihaylova, as cited by the government's press office, informed Saturday that a new regime, which was to be developed in 2014, was to take effect in 2015.

"The garbage fee will not be calculated on the basis of the tax assessment of the property but on the volume of waste – this was provision was adopted in the Local Taxes and Fees Act. When we reduce the volume of waste, the garbage fee should also drop," she declared, adding that the measure would have a tangible impact for citizens.

She assured that Sofia's waste treatment plant project would not collapse and that a contract would be signed by end-2013.

Mihaylova emphasized that Bulgaria was receiving positive signals from the European Commission over the project, adding that the country had replied with exhaustive and relevant information to all questions of the EC.

A letter from the EC informed Friday that no breaches of EU law had been detected in the procedure for the selection of a contractor for the waste treatment plant in Sofia, according to a media statement of the Sofia Municipality.

Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova announced Saturday that the agreement with the contractor could be signed immediately after the submission of the stance of the Ministry of Environment and Water, adding that she expected the document to be filed by the end of the day.
