Xaver Storm Claims Victims, Triggers Traffic Chaos

The powerful North European storm caused traffic chaos and killed three people.

A truck driver died in a crash near Edinburgh, another person was reported killed by a fallen tree in England. A female passenger died after a truck overturned in high winds in Denmark. Many people were injured.

The Xaver storm blasted towards Europe Thursday causing a power outage that left thousands of households without electricity. The measured wind speed reached 228 kph. In Hamburg, Germany temporary wooden stalls were tied down to prevent a storm surge.

The Dutch KLM Airlines canceled 84 flights to Amsterdam, as well as numerous flights in or out of Hamburg, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

All train services were canceled in Scotland, due to damaged infrastructure. Railway transport ceased working in Sweden and Denmark, as well. The German Deutsche Bahn warned of possible traffic delays. The ferries between Sweden and Denmark were canceled.

Meteorologists claim Xavier may be the worst storm to hit Northern Europe in the last 30 years.
