Bulgaria's refugee spending amounts to over BGN 258 M so far, according to defense Minister Angel Naydenov.

Speaking Monday in the western town of Pernik, he said that the EU had granted EUR 6 M plus technical assistance to Bulgaria as a country experiencing migratory pressures.

Naydenov, as cited by Darik radio, made clear that Bulgaria expected additional financial resources in December.

He emphasized that the funding provided by the EU was "a very small part of the resources we need, because it will take hundreds of millions of leva."

Naydenov explained that Bulgaria would also use resources from the state budget, stressing the need to think about the social integration of foreigners who were going to stay in the country.

Bulgaria is currently building a 33 km-long, 3 m-high fence on the border with Turkey to tighten control over illegal immigrants.

The facility is to be built in the region of Elhovo where the terrain makes it difficult to deploy video surveillance cameras.

The aim is to prevent the illegal crossing of the border and redirect the refugee flow towards border crossing points.

Until the facility is completed, this section of the Bulgarian-Turkish border will be guarded by over 1100 police officers.
