The Syrian government has signed the international Chemical Weapons Convention in a first step to fulfill Russia's plan to hand over its chemical arsenal.

Syria UN envoy Bashar Jaafari said that all the releveant documents have been sent by Foreign Minister Walid Muallem to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

A senior UN spokesman has said that the organization still needs time to study the documents.

The move comes hours after Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with US counterpart John Kerry in Geneva to discuss implementation of the Russian plan, designed to avoid a US strike on Syria.

The two delegations did not make official statements after the meeting.
