Self-Immolation Wave Claims 9th Victim in Bulgaria

The wave of self-immolations in Bulgaria has claimed another victim, as a 77-year-old woman set herself ablaze and died in the southern village of Ploski late on Wednesday.

The woman's body was discovered by relatives in her home on Thursday. According to local media, she told her sister that she considered committing suicide.

This is the latest of a string of self-immolations that have shaken Bulgaria since the start of 2013, when large-scale protests against social and economic stagnation erupted.

At least eight people died after setting themselves on fire in EU's poorest country between February and May 2013.

Earlier this week, a 38-year-old woman set her self on fire in the capital Sofia. Her condition was reported as critical on Tuesday.
