Angela Toneva has been appointed director of Bulgaria's state energy and water watchdog agency, after Wednesday resignation of former director Evgenia Haritonova.

Five other members of the State Commission for Energy and Water Regulation (DKEVR) have also resigned, and their positions have been filled by new experts, says a government press release.

Angela Toneva (born 1961) has a degree and economics, and has been an expert at DKEVR since 2001, while since 2009 she has worked in the commission's board.

High electricity and heating bills were among the grievancies that sparked the January-February 2013 protests in Bulgaria that toppled the cabinet of former PM Boyko Borisov and led to snap elections in May.
