The US has returned to Bulgaria 546 stolen and smuggled antique coins.

According to the US Immigration Customs and Enforcement's, ICE, the coins were to be sold in America at a very high price.

They have been handed to the Bulgarian Ambassador in Washington DC, Elena Poptodorova, at a special ceremony at the Bulgarian Consular Office in New York City on May 21.

The Bulgarian Consul General in New York, Radoslav Tochev, the Foreign Ministry Representative for the US, Canada and Mexico, Ivan Anchev, and the Special Representative of the Customs Control Office in New York, James Hayes, attended the ceremony as well.

Poptodorova thanked the US authorities for their professionalism and excellent work, leading to the returning of the valuable antique coins "where they belong – in their homeland Bulgaria."

"It is a special privilege for me to receive on behalf of Bulgarian people part of our rich antique heritage that was taken from us illegally," said the Bulgarian Ambassador.
