Bulgarians Divided on PM Borisov's Resignation

Bulgarians are divided in their opinion on the resignation of Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, according to a recent poll.

The poll has been conducted by the National Center for Study of Public Opinion (NZIOM) between March 21 and March 29.

45% of the respondents say the resignation was escape from responsibility while 42% saw it as a dignified act.

The first group includes the elderly, those with lower living standards, both residents of the capital and of small villages, and supporters of the left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS, and the far-right, nationalist Ataka.

The second group includes people in the 18 - 49 age group, with higher incomes, and living in the largest cities. 83% of the followers of Borisov's center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB, say he acted with dignity in deciding to resign.

Borisov's GERB government, resigned on February 21st amidst huge protest rallies, and President, Rosen Plevneliev, had to appoint a caretaker one

Meanwhile, the ratings of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in March have shown the largest increase among institutions (21%) and have reached 66%, which is attributed to the election of Ruse Metropolitan Neofit for Patriarch. Those approving of the Church are mainly over the age of 50 and with high income.

Neofit enjoys a 64% approval rating.
