German MP Wolfgang Boernsen has expressed his concern over the lack of media pluralism in Bulgaria.

"Apparently, media freedom is being increasingly restricted," Boernsen told the Bulgarian National Radio's world news program on Saturday.

Boernsen noted that the existence of media monopolies in the Balkan country is particularly alarming.

"The European Commission is concerned with that fact, and I am, too," he said.

According to the German lawmaker, the concentration of media ownership has affected Bulgaria's privately owned media to a greater extent than the state-owned ones.

Bulgaria reached the shameful 87th place in the latest Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom Index, down 7 spots in comparison with 2012.

Last year, EU Digital Agenda Commissioner Nellie Kroes has sent a letter to Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov urging him to protect media freedom in the country.
