Bulgaria's Parliament approved a 15% tax rate on turnovers from online and conventional gambling at the second reading of amendments to the VAT Act.

Between the first and second reading of the proposed amendments, Bulgarian MPs reconsidered the initial proposal for a differentiated tax rate under which online games were to be taxed at 7%.

MPs from center-right ruling party GERB argued that the step would encourage organizers of remote gambling to seek a license in Bulgaria.

The gaming industry and the opposition voiced strong opposition to the two different tax rates.

GERB MPs eventually changed their mind to a tax rate of 15% on online gambling, saying that even a rate of 7% would not make online game operators opt for a license in Bulgaria.

The universal 15% tax rate was adopted by Parliament on Thursday without any debates.

The filtering of unlicensed gambling website is expected to start in March 2013.
