Sofia City Court judge Mariyan Markov was heavily beaten in front of his home in downtown Sofia on Friday, according to a local media report.

The perpetrator of the attack is yet to be discovered.

Markov has already been rushed to hospital, 24 Chasa informs. His life is not in danger. Police are currently investigating the incident.

Local media have reminded that Mariyan Markov is the judge who sentenced Alexander Tomov, former president of the CSKA Sofia football club and former CEO of the Kremikovtzi steel plant, to 9 years in jail for embezzlement back in 2011.

Markov also released on bail a suspected murderer, Nikolay Rusinov, earlier in 2012. However, his decision was later overturned by the Sofia Appellate Court and the suspect for the grisly murder of 28-year-old Yana Krasteva back in 2011 was kept in custody.
