President Rosen Plevneliev will hand the Bulgarian flag to the 21st Antarctic Expedition at an official ceremony starting 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

The flag will be hoisted at the Bulgarian Antarctic Base "St. Kliment Ohridski" (BAB) on Livingston Island.

The 21st Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition is headed by Prof Hristo Pimpirev, director of the Antarctic Studies unit at the Bulgarian Academy of Science (BAS), and includes Yordan Yordanov, commander of the Bulgarian Antarctic base, Dragomir Mateev, Vasil Kotev, Gergana Lapteva, Nikolay Chalyov, Konstantin Nedev, Kamen Bonev, Martin Ivanov, Bozhil Vasilev, Nusha Ivanova, Yuri Kuchev, Elena Petrova, Alexander Penev, Lachezar Glavinov, Nikolay Tsankov and Mirena Marincheva.

The first team of Bulgarians will head for Livingston Island on November 9 and is expected to reach the "St. Kliment Ohridski" base on November 30.

The first group will be tasked with preparing the base and transporting food supplies for several months, materials for repair works at the main house, and fuel for the generators.

According to Prof. Pimpirev, the subsidy of the 21st Bulgarian Antarctic expedition has been increased by BGN 50 000 to BGN 350 000 but is still highly insufficient and the researchers are still looking for sponsors.

The research program at the Bulgarian base on Livingston Island is to start in mid-January.
