Germany Oks Bulgarian Consulate in Frankfurt

Germany's Foreign Ministry has notified Bulgaria's Embassy in Berlin that it does not object to the opening of a Bulgarian consulate in the city of Frankfurt am Main.

The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry first put forth the idea for opening a Bulgarian consulate in Frankfurt in the spring of 2012, which will supplant the already closed Bulgarian consulate in the former West German capital Bonn.

The new Bulgarian consulate in Frankfurt will provide services for several German provinces – Hessen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Bremen, and Saarland.

The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry has pointed out that in Frankfurt am Main the Bulgarian government owes a five-storey building that used to house the Bulgarian commercial representation in the city until 1990.

It noted that the new consulate will be continuation of a past tradition as Frankfurt had a Bulgarian consulate between 1925 and 1944.

The work of the Bulgarian consulate in Frankfurt will focus on representing Bulgaria in "Europe's financial capital", as the Foreign Ministry puts it, as well as boosting the ties with the sizable Bulgarian immigrant community in the western provinces of Germany.

Frankfurt has a total of 48 consulates, including 13 consulates of European nations; the city hosts the European Central Bank, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, and the large Frankfurt Airport, among others.
