16 Schoolchildren from Quake-Stricken Japan to Visit Bulgaria

Japanese children from the Japanese city of Higashimatsushima will visit Bulgaria in the period May 27 - June 3 at the invitation of Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov.

The group of 16 Japanese students and 4 group leaders from the quake-stricken area will stay in Bulgaria for eight days.

The initiative aims to express Bulgaria's compassion for the Japanese people and the country's support for Japan's efforts to recover from the disaster of March 11, 2011, according to a media statement of Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry.

The Japanese schoolchildren will visit Sofia, Belogradchik and Koprivshtitsa and natural landmarks in their surroundings.

The visitors will be acquainted with Bulgarian arts and crafts and traditional products like rose oil and Bulgarian yoghurt, which is very popular in Japan.

The Japanese students will visit a rose oil distillation plant and a vineyard and will attend a Bulgarian folk dance workshop led by rhythmic gymnastics coach Neshka Robeva.

In Sofia, the Japanese children will be staying at the homes of their peers from 18 William Gladstone Secondary School, which offers classes in Japanese language and culture.

The group will also meet with Bulgarian Parliament Chair Tsetska Tsacheva and Japan's Ambassador to Bulgaria, H.E. Makoto Ito.
