Bulgaria ranks among the countries with over 20% of women in the government, outpacing a number of other European countries like Poland, the United Kingdom, Italy, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Romania, Hungary, Slovenia, Slovakia and Greece.

Bulgaria has four women in a 17-strong cabinet (22.22%) - Justice Minister Diana Kovacheva, Regional Development Minister Lilyana Pavlova, Environment Minister Nona Karazhova and Health Minister Desislava Atanasova, according to reports of private TV channel bTV.

With its 17 women in the 34-strong new government, France has its first cabinet consisting of an equal number of men and women, as France's new President Francois Hollande vowed.

The European frontrunners in terms of governments' gender balance are the northern countries and Switzerland, which have no gender equality laws, but the equal ratio of men and women is observed as a tradition.
