Bulgarians Try to Clean Country for 1 Day

Thousands of Bulgarians across Bulgaria are going out Saturday on a campaign to clean rubbish from streets and parks.

The campaign, initiated and supported by a network of public institutions, media and companies, attempts to raise awareness about problems with waste disposal.

In addition to cleaning up, the "Let's Clean Bulgaria for One Day" action intends to somehow counteract a popular Bulgarian practice of throwing your trash wherever it may occur.

Not less than 120 illegal waste dumping grounds have been uncovered in capital Sofia before Saturday mid-day, reported Mayor Yordanka Fandakova.

Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev, together with the presidential administration, opted to clean what is believed to be one of the most problematic areas in the capital - the fields around Sofia International Airport.

Thousands of ordinary citizens are also hard at work Saturday, attempting to mend at least for a short while what their fellow citizens will be quick to ruin again.
