There are 593 illegal mobile network base stations functioning in Bulgaria, revealed Bulgarian Minister of Regional Development Lilyana Pavlova Tuesday.

Pavlova was speaking at a press conference presenting priorities for 2012 of Bulgaria's construction regulator agency, the Directorate for National Construction Control at the Ministry of Regional development.

"For 593 base stations the Directorate has found that they do not have a construction permit and a permit for use," said Minister Pavlova.

She called on Bulgarian mobile operators to pursue work on expanding their networks only in abiding by legal regulations.

"Mobile operators have to quickly stop electricity to those base stations and to dismantle their antennas, and then to apply for permits according to the regualtive order," added she.

Those that fail to do so face fines, as well as coercive stopping of electric power on the part of the state.

Minister Pavlova called on mobile phone operators to voluntarily phase out their illegally operating base stations, in order not to disturb networks.

Three mobile phone operators are currently active in Bulgaria: Globul, MTel and Vivacom.
