The police in Bulgaria's capital Sofia have arrested 63 people suspected of partaking in the recent seemingly random night arsons of parked vehicles.

The special police operation comes after in the past few weeks some 40 cars parked near residential buildings in different Sofia quarters were set on fire for unknown reasons.

A total of 2 600 people were targeted as potential arson suspects by the Sofia police, of whom 93 have criminal records; the police inspected more than 1 200 vehicles.

Out of the total of 63 people that were busted, 4 are said to have certainly participated in the arsons, the Interior Ministry announced Wednesday afternoon.

The Ministry statement describes in detail the arrest of the four men in question.

Two of them - aged 24 and 35 – were busted in a vehicle and were found to have with them oil containers that they might have used for one of the arsons on November 22, 2011.

Another pair of men – aged 32 and 17 – was also caught with gas containers inside their car.

The Bulgarian police say they are continuing the investigation of the mysterious night-time car arsons in Sofia.
