BULGARIA's prime minister is in the running for his country's footballer of the year award.

Bokio Borisov, 52, is currently second in the survey, behind Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov, 30.

That puts him ahead of Aston Villa playmaker Stiliyan Petrov and Twente goalkeeper Nikolay Mihaylov.

Fans can vote until Dec. 4, after which a team of sports journalists will determine the winner from among the top 10.

Borisov, who coached the national karate team before attacking politics, became prime minister in 2009 but continues to play regularly with his team Vitosha Bistritsa in an amateur football league.

It is the first time a non-professional player has been nominated.

Borisov, who coached Bulgaria’s karate team, is facing domestic protests over pension reforms.

*Editor’s note: Borisov currently holds the first position in the Footballer of the Year survey.
