Greek Rightists Refuse to Sign Written EU Commitment

The rightist Greek New Democracy party, part of the wide coalition supporting the new cabinet of PM Lucas Papademos, has again refused to sign a document to abide by austerity measures.

"We think that we have done enough to convince our partners that our commitment is earnest and that a written document is out of the question," said leader Andonis Samaras to representatives of the EU, European Central Bank and IMF.

Last week, eurozone president Jean-Claude Juncker and EU economics commissioner Olli Rehn had called for the signing of a written commitment by Greece to abide by austerity measures to implement the second rescue plan for the country.

Commissioner Rehn argued that only such a move could restore trust among the EU partners of Greece.

On his part, Samaras, whose New Democracy was in opposition of resigned PM George Papandreou's PASOK cabinet, has said that such an arrangement is insulting to his country.
