A Bulgarian woman and two compatriots have been detained on the Greek island of Crete after they tried to exchange her two-day infant for 12,000 euros, the Kathimerini daily reported.

According to the police, the woman was put into contact with the childless Greek couple by two compatriots, a man and a woman, whose possible connection to illegal adoption rings is being investigated.

Officers, who had been monitoring the movements of the suspects, caught the three Bulgarians in the act of trying to accept money from the couple near the port of Aghios Nikolaos.

The baby, who was said to be in good health, was being cared for at a local hospital.

The Greek island of Crete is a traditional destination for prospective parents put off by the rigor of traditional adoptions and desperate to bypass that system by producing babies of their own, using a surrogate Bulgarian mother, or just buying the baby she has delivered.
