Rajan Zed, president of the Universal Society of Hinduism, has called on the EU to intervene for the protection of human rights of Roma in Bulgaria following a week of ethnic unrest.

Latent anti-Roma sentiments in Bulgaria fired after the killing of an ethnic Bulgarian by Roma, allegedly instigated by controversial Roma leader Kiril Rashkov, aka Tsar Kiro, who is widely percieved to be leading a criminal way of life protected by Bulgarian authorities.

Zed, who resides in the US state of Nevada, has urged that Roma have always been the victims of scapegoating accross the world and have been blamed for social problems of all sort, reports NewKerala.com.

"Language of hatred does not belong in a civilized and moral world and must be put to an end," he said, pressing for equal treatment of all Bulgarian citizens.

The president of the Universal Society of Hinduism further called on the Bulgarian government to place Roma integration and social upliftment as a first order priority.
